Royal Dornoch Golf Club opens new clubhouse

2025-12-19

Members of the historic Royal Dornoch Golf Club ROYALDORNOCH have had their first glimpse of their spectacular new clubhouse. The £13.9 million building replaces the previous clubhouse, which had been the heart of the club for over 116 years. Among the first guests were three of the longest-serving members: Christine Murray (89), former professional Willie Skinner (92) and Sander MacDonald (89). Club captain Gary Bethune invited them and numerous other members to the new, luxurious, three-storey clubhouse overlooking the world-famous championship course on the Dornoch Firth, an inlet in the Scottish Highlands.

Two years after the start of the ambitious project, Bethune spoke of “one of the most historic days in the history of Royal Dornoch“.

"This is our new home – one that generations of golfers will enjoy,“ explained the captain. ‘Our championship course is one of the best in the world. Now we have a clubhouse that lives up to this reputation.“ Despite its international appeal, the club wants to retain its distinctive Highland charm – as a meeting place for members and locals alike.

General Manager Neil Hampton also expressed his pride: "We are fulfilling a dream. This project is a clear commitment to the future of Royal Dornoch.“ The new clubhouse marks a new beginning and supports the long-term plans to further expand the club's offerings. Particular attention has been paid to reflecting the club's history and tradition in the modern design.

More than 700 of the over 2,000 members live outside the UK, spread across 24 countries. Nevertheless, the clubhouse will continue to play a central role in the social life of the town of Dornoch and will be open to local clubs and groups. During the construction phase, around 100 workers – including many regional companies – were involved at times. "This is one of the most significant private investments in the region and a strong sign of confidence in Dornoch,“ said Hampton.

The official opening of the new clubhouse is planned for spring 2026.
