“Semper paratus” is the official motto of many organizations, such as the United States Coast Guard, and could also be applied to La Reserva Club, venue of La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational from May 16 to 19. Its translation, simple and convincing: “Always ready”.
Thanks to the great work of La Reserva Club greenkeeping staff, this Cabell B. Robinson design offers an impeccable presentation throughout the year and is ready to host the first of the three Ladies European Tour events to be held in Spain during 2019. The LET golfers (and the lucky few that will play in the Pro-Am) will be able to see first-hand the care taken in this course set between the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding hillsides, highlighted by the prestigious Golf World magazine as the ninth best Spanish golf course.
“This championship course is ready to host any event throughout the year, because it is always at the highest level. Three years ago, we had only six weeks to prepare the NH Collection Open of the European Tour and we did it, so this time it won’t pose a problem”, said José María Menacho, La Reserva Club superintendent. “We will spare no effort to present the best face of our course. We have a great course, a great design, our maintenance work is superb, and we will work hard in the manicuring so everybody can see it”.
La Reserva Club de Sotogrande is one-of-a-kind luxury community in Spain and Europe. Exclusivity, attention to detail, state-of-the-art design and exquisite care are its main ingredients, but José María Menacho is the most qualified voice to highlight the features of this spectacular Cabell B. Robinson course:
“Among the main features of La Reserva Club, I would mention its large Agrostis greens, with an average of about 700 m2. Usually, green speed is 10,5 on the Stimpmeter,” said Menacho. “Fairways are wide and undulating, and the Bermuda rough will be thick during the tournament. It’s a long golf course, but at the same time its appeal attracts all kinds of players”.
In addition to the length and the complications posed by the greens, wind will probably be one of the main antagonists of the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational players.
“In the area of Sotogrande there are two predominant winds: East and West. West wind usually makes the greens harder and faster, while East wind is more humid. In any case, if the wind blows most of the holes will be affected,” concludes Menacho.
It is difficult to highlight holes in such a balanced and varied course, but we cannot fail to mention the challenge posed by 8th hole, probably the hardest with a pronounced dogleg flanked by a large lake on the right; the beauty of two par 3 holes, 15th and 17th, well-guarded by bunkers and water hazards; and the demanding shot to an elevated green on the 18th hole.
Stage for first-class amateur tournaments in Spain and venue of the NH Collection Open of the European Tour and The Gecko Masters, it’s the first time La Reserva Club hosts a professional women event, becoming the first Sotogrande course that welcomes a Ladies European Tour event. La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational, sponsored by La Reserva de Sotogrande and organized by Deporte & Business, will have a 126 players field (with 10 invitations) and a prize fund of € 300,000.
