Golf around the Clock - Gorki White Nights

2020-06-27

From end of May until mid July St. Petersburg celebrates the world famous “White Nights”.
With 19 hours of sunlight it almost never gets dark and people can enjoy the beautiful location
at the estuary mouth of River Neva into the Baltic Sea, its grand palaces, beautiful parks,
elegant channels, wonderful squares and world class museums for almost 24 hours. This
special lightning turns “The Venice of the North” into a unique party mile which attracts visitor
from all over the world to Russia’s second biggest city (over 5 million residents).
The “White Nights” are a special time for golfers as well, especially since in 2015 the first golf
resort in the greater St. Petersburg area opened. Gorki Golf & Resort is located about 50 miles
north of the city center of St. Petersburg, just an hour’s drive away. With its 4-star hotel (26
rooms, 4 family rooms and 2 luxurious suites) Gorki Golf & Resort is the ideal base to enjoy
everything St. Petersburg has to offer and test your game on a course ranked among Europe’s
Top 100. During the “White Nights” golfers can even play around the clock. This leaves plenty
of time for sightseeing and joining the festivities in St. Petersburg.
Gorki Golf & Resort has been part of the “White Nights” celebration since 2015. Each year a
marathon 24 hour tournament called “Gorki White Nights” marks the highlight of the season.
More than a hundred golfers of all skill levels are competing in this event (enclosed a few
snapshots from the 2019 tournament). Unfortunately, this year the tournament had to be
cancelled due to the Corona pandemic. But plans for the 2021 competition are under way.
The dates for the “Gorki White Nights 2021” have been set for June 27 and 28, 2021. The
tournament is open for teams of three male players and teams of two for ladies and juniors.
Participants will be part of one the most unique tournaments in the world. According to an old
Russian tradition guests are greeted with salt and bread. Russian folklore and Russian food
can be enjoyed during the event in the spacious two-storied clubhouse. Cheerleaders are also
part of the event rooting for all teams. Golfers not only compete on the course. Each year all
teams strive to get nominated for the best team outfit. Last year the honor went to a group
wearing hussar costumes as worn by light cavalry of the 15th-20th centuries.
Since the hotel offers all kind of treatments in its spa – ideal to recover from marathon golf.
Guests can relax in an open-air swimming pool and jacuzzi, Finnish Sauna and massage
rooms.
But most of all golfers will rave about the great golf course in wonderful landscape. The 6560
(Par 72) championship golf course can accommodate golfers of all levels due to five different
tee boxes on each hole. From the black “tiger” tees the course is a real challenge even for
professionals, but provided you use the right tee the course is also fun to play for high
handicappers. The course was designed by well-known Finnish golf course architect Lasse
Pekka Tilander. The former top amateur and member of the Finnish national team has laid out
more than twenty courses in five countries among them master pieces like Pärnu Bay Golf
Links in Estonia and Sand Valley in Poland. Tilander, who is also a fully qualified PGA
Professional, describes the Gorki course as an “inland links course” with wide fairways and
large bunkers. At the World Golf Awards in 2018 the Gorki Golf & Resort was awarded two
prizes, one for “best golf course in Russia” and for ”Russia’s best golf hotel”. A lavish driving
range, putting and pitching greens and three practice holes in combination with the golf
academy offer a chance to improve or finetune your game.
Gorki Golf Resort does not only attract visitors during the “White Nights”. The golf season runs
from May 1st to October 31st, but the hotel is open all year long. In winter guests can use the
ice-skating rink, the cross-country ski runs or enjoy sleigh rides.
Gorki Golf & Resort can organize complete golfing trips to St. Petersburg with city tours and
all transfers from and to the airport. Also starting times and transfers to neighboring golf
courses like Peterhof Golf Club, Mill Creek Golf Club or Strawberry Fields Golf Club can be
arranged.
