The new St. Patrick!s Links make it to the Top 100 in their first year

2021-11-18

Every two years, the American "Golf Magazine" publishes the ranking "Top 100 Golf Courses in the World" in its print magazine and on its website www.golf.com. The 2021-22 ranking, which is led by Pine Valley in New Jersey as it has been for years, includes seven new courses this time - and the best of these newcomers is the St. Patrick's Links of the Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort in Donegal in the Northwest of Ireland, ranked 55th.

St. Patrick's Links was designed by 60-year-old American star architect Tom Doak and only opened in mid 2021. The spectacular course in the dunes of picturesque Sheephaven Bay is part of the oldest golf resort in the world (opened in 1893) and now the largest on the "Emerald Isle".

Rosapenna thus has three magnificent links courses, in addition to the St. Patrick's Links, the Old Tom Morris Links and the Sandy Hills Links (designed by Pat Ruddy) as well as a 9-hole course called Coastguard Nine plus extensive practice facilities (12-hole Par3 short course, a partially covered driving range with natural grass) and a large clubhouse, the Golf Pavillion, with bar and pro shop.

Golfers have been flocking to this scenic corner of Ireland since the St. Patrick's Links course opened in late June 2021. Doak is already represented with courses Tara Iti, Cape Kidnappers (both New Zealand) as well as Barnbougle Dunes (Tasmania, Australia) in the Top 100 ranking of "Golf Magazine", which is one of the largest golf publications in the world with a circulation of 1.5 million.

John Casey, resort director and one of the sons of the owner family Casey, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have ranked so highly the year the course has opened, having Tom Doak with his international reputation build a course here in Donegal is a dream come true and we think this will have a huge impact on tourism in this part of the country.”

“Golf Magazine” explains the high ranking of St. Patrick’s Links as follows: “Set in the northwest

county of Donegal, St. Patrick’s too will soon become a household name with golfers flocking here to experience the unbridled joy that comes from playing in and among big dunes with steady winds adding to the challenge. The course looks like it has been there for a century, instead of having opened in 2021, which speaks volumes about the routing and the talented shapers that worked the land.”

The Rosapenna Hotel is closed for the winter and will reopen April 12, 2022. Weather permitting

play is available on the Old Tom Morris Links or the Sandy Hills Links. The St. Patrick's Links will reopen next season. There are many attractive offers such as 3 nights with breakfast and 3 rounds
